The Confidant
Derek came from a loud, gregarious background, the antithesis of Ruth's quiet, reserved family. If he invited friends for dinner, she would often cook them a wonderful meal and then make her apologises and retire to her bedroom without joining them. She just felt uncomfortable in society, avoiding it where possible. There was the odd exception however, when occasionally she could be encouraged to have a glass of cider and then she could become quite relaxed and tiddly, but this was rare. Derek put it down to her Plymouth Brethren ancestors and their penitents over enjoying life.
