Ironically just two weeks after Josse’s birth, ‘The New American Painting' exhibition opened at the Tate Gallery* and Ruth sadly couldn’t make it up to London, but Derek couldn’t stop himself. He did however bring back a copy of the catalogue, and while he favoured Motherwell and Kline, Ruth fell in love with Rothko and found inspiration with Pollock’s spontaneous approach.
*The New American Painting exhibition was shown in eight European countries between 1958- 1959
