The first pictures Ruth kept, dating back to the late 1950s, were her pastels, compositions of trees, drawn in a manner that echoed the fauves with their stylised forms and flat colours.
She used pastels during the early 1960s and Josse recalls, "I remember her sets of chalk pastels; they fascinated me, each pastel laying neatly in a crib of cotton wool in a long, smart looking, wooden box. They looked like sweets."
