Ruth and Cleo 1957
Ruth gave birth to her first child Cleo in 1957 and before the decade was out, a second, Josse, in February of 1959, which was unfortunate timing, as it clashed with another big event, that Derek had been waiting a long time to see.
Throughout the 1950s, since news of 'The American Action Painters'* started filtering into the British arts community, Derek had been itching to see the real thing, but it wasn’t until now that he finally had his chance.
*This term was coined by the American critic Harold Rosenberg in 1952
