Arundel
While out walking through Preston Bisset, a village near Hillsden, Ruth and Derek had met a Mrs Lacey who became a good friend. She had a flat in London, near Lords, where Ruth visited her and she sat for her portrait. Now she was kindly going to lend them the money to buy their first house as, two years after the formation of the Hillesden group, the need for individual space – especially when it came to kitchen usage – had come to a head. So Ruth and Derek decided to venture south, looking for a house to buy in Sussex.
They explored the properties in the Arundel area and found Duff House was for sale when they drove by. Derek said it was his ideal house, so they asked, but it had gone to auction the day before; however no one had turned up because it was snowing, so they managed to buy it for the opening price.
