None of Ruth's art was dated during the 1950s, but it is plain that the transition from the tightly controlled school work of the 1940s to her loose abstracts of the late 1950s happened with remarkable speed. She went through an awakening, having been introduced to the whole world of 20th century art and contemporary painters by Derek, which makes it impossible to talk about Ruth’s artistic career without touching on Derek’s prior to their first meeting back in the sanatorium in 1951.
