Ruth remembers “Derek had his Austin Nippy. I used to look out for his red car driving back across a raised piece of road beyond the fields, driving back from the army base where he worked as cartographer."
" I couldn’t cook, Derek showed me how to cook scrambled eggs. We had our milk brought round by Will the milkman. He carried it on a yolk on his shoulders. He used to ladle it out. I remember the swallows nest above the porch. The babies kept falling out and we kept having to put them back.”
