One of Ruth’s little plaque

VENTNOR

Ruth helped supplement her income between 1950 and 1951 by making plaster plaques painted with images of mice, birds and rabbits.

She did secretarial work and at one job Ruth recalls her boss Mr Hum had a constant cough. It soon passed on to her, the result being that In 1951 she was told she had Tuberculosis and had to stay in bed.

She hated the jabs in the bottom but on a happier note recalled. "There was honeysuckle outside my window and I fed the mice weeny, weeny cheese biscuits and they came down and took them from the window ledge."
