Paul doing his national service
The following year, 1950, saw Paul doing national service in the Far East and Ruth attending Sutton Art School. There she still found it hard to integrate with her peers, this time finding them rather too permissive. She quickly left, but not before dating her first boyfriend there. “He was from the navy and he came to visit me. My mother was so thrilled I had met someone.” It was only a passing friendship however and she recalls that later that year “I had a thing about the window cleaner, he was rather attractive, he used to flirt”.*
