Josse remembers as a child, ‘watching her pictures emerge, those beautiful landscapes, perched there on her easel. Then suddenly the picture would vanish, and she would start another, but that would vanished too. Weeks later they’d reappear, but then she would start to scratch and scrub the paint away and I would be even more heartbroken, until slowly she would build up new colours and to my relief, the picture would continue to evolve. I only knew when she had finished, because she would varnish them.’
