The idea was conceived at Derek and Eric's flat in Earls Court. “Eric wanted to go to Paris and paint until the money ran out. I [Derek] felt the Paris scene was over and suggested ceramics as an alternative. This was agreed on. It was now necessary to find someone to instruct us and somewhere to practice. John [Clarke] was the obvious choice. At this time I had just returned from a disastrous trip to Yugoslavia on a motorbike” and was off to Ventnor Sanatorium “so it became incumbent on John and Eric to find the appropriate accommodation.”*
