Nicholas Moore
Nicholas Moore

He was highly educated in arts, music and literature and spoke numerous languages, however Nicholas Moore was as humble as they came. His mother explained how by the age of five, he had learnt how to read simply by deciphering the words on the reverse of the daily newspaper, as his father sat reading. After working for MI5 in Berlin as a code breaker during the cold war he chose the life of a radio engineer, on long haul ships. This gave him the opportunity to both visit the great museums while ashore in such places as Russia, Germany and Holland and to enjoy the peace to read and study his books, while at sea.

When his ship docked at Antwerp or Amsterdam, Nicholas would instantly jump on a plane, fly to England and catch a train to Arundel, just for a fleeting visit, a bottle of Brandy for Derek and chocolate for Ruth and maybe a hurried meal of baked beans on toast, before dashing back in time for his ships departure. Eventually he found local employment and was persuaded to move into the cottage at Duff House.
