Soon she felt confident enough in her work to tackle larger oils, such as ‘Binsted’. Ruth recalls the painting, “By the pub - the one over the piano - of Binsted“ * and goes on to say, “I hadn’t got any brushes, I used a stick- a piece of golden-rod or something. Derek didn’t appreciate it, but I thought it was rather good. I rather like using a stick. The feeling was there. Only now I appreciated it - if I was on the razor’s edge, I was ok, being between conscious and unconscious, then I could go ahead.”

*Quote from Ruth aged 88, looking back on her life. Her memory is sharp, but she falters at times “… the one over the piano” referring to where it had hung in Duff House for fifty years. Binsted was a hamlet not far from Arundel where Derek could enjoy a good pint and Ruth could study the landscape which was predominantly elm trees, hawthorn and fields.
